Mr. Preus has over twenty-five years of unique experience in various
segments of the healthcare industry. He started his professional
career as a healthcare consultant focused on operational and financial
systems in hospitals. During his fifteen years with proprietary
mental health and substance abuse provider systems, he developed
his management and communication skills. He served as Executive
Vice President and COO of an American Medical International subsidiary
and as Senior Vice President and CFO at Advanced Health Systems,
Inc. These experiences with large multi-state, multi-facility corporations
gave him an appreciation for the organizational structure, managerial
metrics and communications required to manage the delivery of quality
customer service in the rapidly changing healthcare field.
In the 1990s, Mr. Preus joined Abt Associates, Inc. as Director
of Operations for the Business Research and Consulting practice,
coordinating the project schedules and staff resource allocation
of the seventy-member consulting group. There he assisted clients
in evaluating the effects of managed care on business operations
and identifying new strategic opportunities created by changing
market dynamics. He was actively involved with the development of
outcomes measurement approaches that employers and health plans
used to evaluate and improve performance. While at Abt, Mr. Preus
served as project manager for the preparation of the groundbreaking
health plan performance report, the New England HEDIS Coalition's
1993 Baseline Performance Profile. He was engaged by the Coalition,
an association of major employers and health plans, to develop the
first report and comparative reports for the next three years. For
the Pacific Business Group on Health (PBGH), he administered one
of the largest employee surveys to evaluate performance of the over
fifty health plans offered by large West Coast employers. Mr. Preus
also directed the team that assisted with the development of the
first strategic plan for the eleven medical centers of the newly
formed six-state, Veterans Administration New England Healthcare
System (VA NEHS). He also managed a team that staffed the implementation
process of the VA NEHS' Ambulatory Care product line strategy.
Prior to Abt, he was the Manager of the Boston healthcare consulting
practice of a national accounting firm. Today, Mr. Preus continues
to consult to, and share his communications, marketing, operational
and financial expertise with, a wide range of clients in the healthcare
industry. Through his Strategic Communications Group and its affiliates,
he is applying his extensive knowledge of customer and patient satisfaction
issues to facilitate service quality improvement in provider settings.
Mr. Preus served for many years on the Commonwealth of Massachusetts'
Advisory Council on Alcoholism and Drug Rehabilitation providing
policy and budget oversight to the Department of Public Health's
Bureau of Substance Abuse. Mr. Preus' B.S. in Industrial Distribution
and MBA are both from Bradley University.
